In November 2023, following a devastating earthquake in Morocco, the country’s cultural sector actively supported recovery efforts. The earthquake, which occurred on September 8, caused nearly 3,000 deaths, injured thousands, and destroyed over 50,000 homes, including significant heritage sites like the Tinmel mosque and Marrakech’s ancient Jewish quarter.

Led by regional director Eric Falt, expressed readiness to assist Morocco, referencing their previous post-earthquake efforts in Iran, Nepal, Turkey, and Syria. Mehdi Qotbi from the National Foundation of Museums (NFM) in Morocco reported that three Marrakech museums suffered damage and were receiving reconstruction aid, including a $1.2 million package from the Aliph Foundation.
Significant funds for relief efforts
Artists like M’barek Bouhchichi, whose studio was damaged, highlighted the severe impact on remote mountain villages. Initiatives like the Fondation Jardin Majorelle and the Alliances Group have contributed financially and through actions like blood drives and reconstruction projects. An auction at the Mohammed VI Museum in Rabat raised significant funds for relief efforts.
Other Groups’ support actions
Groups like 1-54 Art Fair and Artists for Morocco, initiated by Samira Larouci, Anass Ouaziz, and Ismail Elaaddioui, have been instrumental in raising funds through art sales. Their efforts support NGOs like Amal Women’s Training Center and Rif Tribes Foundation, providing essential resources to affected communities.
Art sales, including works by Hassan Hajjaj, have raised significant funds. The cultural sector emphasizes the need for ongoing support, especially as colder months approach and many still live in temporary shelters. Their efforts demonstrate the role of art in healing and rebuilding communities after such disasters.
