“Crossing the Divide: An Ode to Hope and Despair” by Saïd Rouhli
Sadoun presents a poignant and thought-provoking masterpiece in his latest vertical oil painting. This work, deeply moving and rich in symbolism, captures the harrowing journey of immigrants, embodying both their hopes and the grim realities they face.
Three distinct areas
The painting is visually divided into three distinct areas, each telling a part of this compelling narrative. The lower section is awash in a deep, immersive blue, reminiscent of a vast and unforgiving sea. The middle horizontal section which is disrupted by haunting red shapes, dark and ominous, floating along an invisible boundary. These forms, akin to blood stains, float on the horizon, a stark reminder of the perilous journey undertaken by many in search of a better life.
Above, the upper section could be interpreted as the open sky, a contrast to the turmoil below, yet equally stirring and profound. It represents the destination, the dream that propels these journeys forward, but also the vast unknown that looms overhead.
What Sadoun wants us to notice
The most striking elements that Sadoun wants us to notice, are two circular shapes situated on either side of this dividing line. On the lower side, a perfect circle, akin to a relentless saw, symbolizes the dangers and trials that the immigrants must endure. This circle seems poised to shred the red floating forms, a metaphor for the ruthlessness of their journey. Above, in the orange hues of the painting, a less perfect, transparent circle allows the blue of the sky to peek through. It suggests a glimmer of hope, the possibility of reaching the destination, yet it is not without its ambiguity.
Sadoun’s painting is a profound commentary on the plight of immigrants, as he himself explained. « The red darkish shapes represent those attempting to cross treacherous seas for a better life. The lower circle embodies the suffering and challenges they face, while the journey’s uncertainty is captured in the imperfect circle above ».
Cost of seeking new horizons, according to Sadoun
This piece is not just a painting; it is a story of resilience and despair, a vivid reminder of the human cost of seeking new horizons. Sadoun’s work invites us to contemplate the struggles faced by many and to acknowledge the complex tapestry of hope and sorrow that defines our shared humanity.
